Celebrating Connections: The Impact of Community at My Book Launch Event

I didn’t know what to expect going into this weekend. If I’m being honest, I’ve never really been to a book launch before, not like this. Maybe once, years ago. But this? This was something else entirely. And I’m still trying to find the words for it.

The Familiar Comfort of Opening Day
Opening Day always feels familiar and grounding. It’s full of ritual and laughter, a moment that brings people together year after year. Being there with the Yankees Opening Day crew, watching the younger generation step into something we’ve carried for years, reminded me how important it is to pass things down. Traditions, moments, and memories. These are the things that hold us together over time.
For me, baseball has always been that connection. It’s more than a game; it’s a shared experience that links generations. This weekend, though, baseball became something more.
Launching Grief, Hope, Baseball: Essays
On April 3rd, 2026, Grief, Hope, Baseball: Essays officially launched. By the second day, it hit #1 New Release on Amazon in the Hispanic & Latin category and ranked as high as #19 in Best Sellers. That success is something I’m incredibly proud of, but it’s not what stayed with me.
What stayed with me was the room.

The Power of the Room
People from every chapter of my life were there, from childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. All in one space. To look around and see a room filled with people I’ve shared real, meaningful relationships with was overwhelming in the best way.
There was no judgment. No drama. Just love.
This kind of gathering reminded me how important community is. It’s not just about celebrating a book or an achievement. It’s about celebrating the people who have shaped, supported, and stood by us through everything.
The Significance of the Sixth Street Community Center
Being back at the Sixth Street Community Center made the event even more special. That place holds history for me and for so many others. It’s a space where memories are made, friendships are formed, and stories are shared.
Having Shawn welcome us so openly and warmly made it feel like things had come full circle. The community center wasn’t just a venue; it was a symbol of connection and belonging.
More Than Signing Books
At one point, I was sitting behind the table, signing books. But something didn’t feel right. So I stood up. I moved to the edge of the table. I started talking more, connecting more, taking pictures, and having meaningful conversations.
Because this event was never just about signing a book. It was about meeting the people in it. My people.

What Grief, Hope, Baseball Means
This book is about having. Having grief, having hope, having baseball as a thread that weaves through life’s challenges and joys. It’s about the moments that shape us and the people who walk alongside us.
The launch event was a reminder that these connections matter. They give us strength, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
Why Community Matters
Events like this show how a community can transform an ordinary moment into something unforgettable. Here are a few reasons why the community made this launch so impactful:
Shared history creates a deep bond that goes beyond surface-level interactions.
Supportive presence helps us feel seen and valued.
Passing down traditions keeps memories alive and connects generations.
Open conversations foster understanding and healing.
Celebrating together amplifies joy and pride.
Taking the Experience Forward
If you’re planning an event or launching a project, think about the people who have been part of your journey. Invite them in. Create space for connection. Focus on the relationships, not just the milestones.
That’s where the real magic happens.
This weekend reminded me that success isn’t just about numbers or rankings. It’s about the people who show up, the stories we share, and the love that fills the room. That’s what lasts.
